Project:
R. Guyton Residence, Waynesboro VA
Overview:
Cedar Shakes and Shingles Inc. (CSS) was contacted by USAA insurance company to help out in the possible repair work of a cedar roof due to storm damage. CSS was asked to visit the Guyton residence to determine the extent of damage to the roof due to a tree which had struck the roof during a recent thunderstorm. One initial concern was the location of the residence in Waynesboro VA in relation to our shop in Manassas VA.
During the inspection of the storm damage it became evident that the entire cedar roof needed to be replaced due to the current overall condition. The Guyton's were interested in replacing the existing cedar roof with a new cedar roof but wanted to have a new roof that required little maintenance and maintained the current overall look of the house.
Solution:
CSS proposed to the Guyton's that they use a 1/2" x 24" Pressure Treated Medium Certi-split shake with copper strips laced into the roof. This would reduce the effects of the UV rays on the southern exposure side of the roof and the new shakes would blend with the existing cedar shingle siding.
The landscaping of the lot had many large oak trees that provide shade but also caused mold and moss to build up on the cedar shakes over time. This problem was solved by adding copper strips every 6th course to let the natural rain water run over the copper and continually clean the cedar roof.
The cedar shingle siding was also changed in two sections on the southern exposure side of the house from natural cedar to pressure treated cedar to perform better against the sun over time. The location of Waynesboro VA was minimized by having our crews stay overnight locally and staging the entire job before hand at our shop in Manassas VA. The final touch to the residence was added by installing 6" seamless copper gutters along with copper screen to help with the fall leaves.
End Result:
When the project was finished it achieved the look the Guyton's wanted in the roof as well as the over all look of the house and the proposed new cedar material will perform much better than the original cedar roof.
